NOTE TO EXISTING USERS

We have recently released a new version of the PocketGPSWorld.com Safety Camera Database. There's a slight difference (and it wont work straight out of the box, so take note!).

  • pocketgps_uk_gatso.ov2
  • pocketgps_uk_redlight.ov2
  • pocketgps_uk_specs.ov2
  • pocketgps_continental.ov2
  • pocketgps_uk_mobile.ov2
  • pocketgps_uk_temp.ov2

Introduction

Have you had your photo taken lately?  No?  You must be one of the lucky ones!  Thousands of motorists are posing for their photos every day, and it's costing them money and points on their license.  One way to cut speeding down on our roads is to be more aware of the road conditions, your limits as a driver, other drivers around you and use a speed warning system and set this to the speed limit of the road.  You'll be surprised how quickly you go over the speed limit and most of the time you don't even know it.

Pocket GPS has started mapping out the UK and Europe with Fixed and Mobile cameras including GATSO's and Truvelo cameras, and also including regular mobile laser sites, motorway bridge hangout points for Traffic Police cars.  People like yourself help report any new cameras, moved cameras or any cameras that have been removed to keep the database current, so it is a group collaboration. The government has changed the name of the cameras recently to safety cameras, and are only permitting these at regular accident blackspots.  Our database should help you not only learn what areas are dangerous to drive in, but to help cut your speed so you don't need to worry about whether you are over the speed limit or not.  If you start to cut your speed, it's part of the way there, if you then continue to do this throughout all roads you're less likely to have an envelope come through the letterbox with a prize winning photo of yourself.

Safety Camera Van's

As we have already said, what used to be called Speed Cameras or Law Enforcement Cameras have now been renamed to Safety Cameras.  This allows the government and the Police force to use vans like these on many of our roads that have higher accident rates, or death rates.

Not all accidents and deaths on our roads are from speeding, many more are from reckless driving, but the two can come hand in hand.

The response from the Police and Government is to cut your speed, and the Police are out in force.

Please note that our database is not to help you speed in areas where you shouldn't, it's to help you lower your speed throughout all roads that you drive, and to be aware of potential areas where Safety Cameras may be in force for informational purposes only, so you can be more vigilant at monitoring your speed throughout these locations and ensure that you don't accidentally travel a few miles per hour above the speed limit like when traveling down a steep hill, or when you're overtaking another vehicle.  We also do not guarantee that all fixed, mobile, truvelo or specs cameras are in our database, so please do not believe that this database contains the entire camera list as it doesn't, but this does support a vast majority of cameras you will see on our roads today.  We also accept NO liability whatsoever for you receiving any speeding fines or points on your license through using this database or guarantee the accuracy of the data contained within this database either expressed or implied.

Using our Database with your SatNav Product

The PocketGPSWorld.com Safety Camera Database can be ported to several different applications and used for either alerting of speed cameras, or just to display where they are situated. Natively we support the following applications. Any other application that doesn't accept customisable POI's as a CSV import will not be able to support our database.

TomTom

  • Navigator 1
  • Navigator 2

PocketGPSWorld.com POI-Sync Service

Using TomTom Navigator 1 or 2 ? Why not download our Safety Camera Database using the new Pocket GPS POI-Sync is a new service from the Pocket GPS Team.  This will allow you to download the latest Safety Camera Database as soon as it becomes available.

The Pocket GPS POI-Sync also incorporates all of the POI's listed at Pocket GPS, categorised into country sets, which you can download and sync to your Pocket PC in the desktop cradle whilst you're online.

Pocket GPS POI-Sync will work with GPSAssist, POI-Warner, CheckPOInt and many more add-on POI programs using a desktop application called POI-Edit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can AutoRoute use the UK GATSO Database ?

A. Yes, from the November 2003 release (v1.111) you can import the CSV file within the ZIP into AutoRoute using DATA | IMPORT DATA WIZARD | Select the CSV file, then select COMMA Delimited, the first column you should set to Longitude, the second column to Latitude, and the third column to Name. Click Finish and the data should be imported as pushpins into AutoRoute.

Q. Can Pocket Streets use the UK GATSO Database ?

A. Not directly, although you could import them as pushpins, save your maps to Pocket Streets and use Push Pins.

Q. How do I submit cameras to the database ?

A. Email us either your OV2 file or ASC file and we will work out which cameras we don't have and which cameras we do have.  Please be careful when adding cameras not to add false ones.

Q. Which cameras are you interested in ?

A. We are interested in all Fixed GATSO's (Gray/Yellow boxes), Gantry speed cameras (eg M25), Truvelo, Frequent Mobile Speed Traps, S.P.E.C.S Cameras and Temporary/Roadwork Cameras.  Do not list an accident blackspot unless there are frequent mobile speed cameras at that location.

Q. How often will the database be updated ?

A. Currently we attempt to release a database each month, but when time permits and more cameras are available we will endeavour to update the database once every two weeks.

Q. Can I use the Safety Camera Database with any of these GPS Navigation Programs ?

A.  If you don't see your application listed above, we may still be able to support it, but the program must be able to support Customisable Points Of Interest (POI) and be able to import 3 fields containing Longitude, Latitude and Comments. If you are unsure, ask in our Safety Camera Forum.

Q. You have a UK Safety Camera Database, will you create one for other countries ?

A. Yes, providing there's enough requests for it, and people are prepared to document cameras they pass and send it to us.

Q. I have a website and would like to publish your Speed Camera data, or use it within my own application, am I permitted to do so ?

A. No you cannot publish our database on your website. This database is only allowed to be distributed and published from the Pocket GPS World website and cannot be charged for in any way. If you want to be able to support our camera database, please email us requesting to do so. You won't be able to bundle the database with your application, and you won't be able to sell our database or charge any extra for the use of our database.
