ALK (which used to be called TravRoute) have completely re-branded the company back to the original ALK world-wide and this is shown more so in CoPilot Live 5, where ALK have listened to the user community and with help from them and further input from PocketGPSWorld.com, a new CoPilot Live 5 has been born. If you like CoPilot Live 4 then you'll love the new CoPilot Live 5. It keeps the reliability of the application, maps and data, and graphically enhances the product to make it more useable and user friendly.

PocketGPSWorld.com has done it again! This time, the CoPilot Live | Pocket PC 5 North American Review! This review extends on and compliments the existing European Review to give North American readers more information regarding the differences and routing.

ALK really have out done themselves with CoPilot 5! CoPilot 5 is a superb product, a pleasure to use and will definitely get you from A to B with the least amount of hassle using CoPilot's Traffic feature!

Bo Peep and I (Privateer) have just returned from a holiday in Jersey (Channel Islands) where we used ALK's CoPilot v5 as the primary navigation aid. Here are a few words of our findings of using CoPilot v5 in Jersey.

Unfortunately we only had CoPilot a few weeks before going to Jersey. We normally use TomTom Navigator 3 for the PDA, therefore we are biased towards TomTom. Unfortunately TomTom maps (Tele Atlas data) don't cover the Channel Islands so we decided to go for another SatNav package which did, hence we got CoPilot V5 .

Deluo is a relatively new player in the market of Pocket PC navigation systems. The product was available for the American market for a while (developed by Netropa and coming in a variety of OEM versions), but now it looks like Routis becomes a serious competitor, especially with the feverishly awaited addition of Canada maps (all big cities and some areas in between are covered) and the neat double feature of the application being available on both a normal PC and on the Pocket PC.

PowerLOC Destinator 3 is the successor to PowerLOC Destinator 2.  Destinator 3 was first made available in late 2003 and comes in both Pan European and North American versions.  The European version includes maps of UK and Europe.  Destinator 3 has some neat new features like Custom Maps, Multi-Part Journeys, Birds Eye View, newer high resolution maps (NavTech Q2-2003), avoid roads, complete country-wide maps (no more segments!) and a new Destinator Community just to whet your appetite.

Amongst the GPS community Mitac's Mio 168 has been one of the most anticipated handhelds this year and with good reason. The Mio 168 is the first PocketPC to contain a built-in GPS receiver and has already appeared in other world markets. It's first showing here in the UK is courtesy of Evesham Technology who has chosen ALK's excellent CoPilot Live for their offering.

The Garmin iQue 3600 is a good combined navigation product. However I was disappointed as I have been really spoiled with the Street Pilot III Deluxe and I was half expecting a Street Pilot III Deluxe in a smaller form factor in PDA style, and with the mapping errors and the power save screen turning off (only on battery mode - not with the automotive kit), really was not what I received. Garmin have with all intense purposes made this an affordable version of their well known top of the range Street Pilot III Deluxe, and I think with a little work in bug fixes (several that have just been posted to Garmin's website), will make this a great product.

Mapopolis is a product that has been out for quite a while in the US, and offers downloadable maps which can be purchased direct from their website.  The maps are highly detailed, but contain lines as roads, rather than full width roads.  The product offers automatic re-routing, voice navigation and much more.  Mapopolis ClearRoute offers much more by the way of live traffic news, where you can subscribe to the new maps and receive up to the minute news on which roads not to take, and allow Mapopolis to re-route you accordingly.

Aldi caused quite a stir when they released this bundle, at £329.00 it appeared to be fantastic value for money and came bundled with everything you could possibly need to get up and running with a working satellite navigation system. This review aims to cover the Medion PDA and the Medion Navigator software as well as the large number of accessories included!

Navigon is an emerging name across Europe and Navigon's main office is situated in Würzburg, Germany.

Recently Navigon have released European maps, started selling older versions with the Medion's packaged deal at Aldi Supermarkets and Halfords in the UK, and now Navigon have brought out version 4 of their Mobile Navigator which we will review here.

As long as I have been interested in getting a satellite navigation system, there has been a single justification for me; dynamic re-routing based on the current traffic situation. Secondly it had to be a PDA based system as I change my car regularly. And thirdly I did not want to tie up my phone and a subscription-based service using GPRS. Anyway in short I wanted a PDA based satellite navigation system with RDS-TMC support. The only software that I knew of at the time was Alturion but according to their support department they do not support TMC with UK maps.

Microsoft Pocket Streets 2002 was bundled with Microsoft AutoRoute 2002.  This came as a free add-on allowing you to save areas of country maps on the PC and export them to your Pocket PC.

Although the maps are quite good on the PC, they lack detail on the Pocket PC and there's no support for routing or searching for streets.

The largest change that Navman have made is that they have decided to switch from NAVTEQ to TeleAtlas for their geodata (map support).

As many of you have read in the forums there's quite a backlash from existing Navman users who are used to NAVTEQ maps. Why's this ?

We recently reviewed the new Navigon Mobile Navigator | 4. Now we have reviewed the new American version called OnCourse Navigator 4. This review attempts to expand on the European review, and to show some of the US specific aspects of the Navigon engine that sits behind OnCourse Navigator 4.

In Europe, Navigon is one of the big three players in the market for Pocket PC based navigation systems – it will be very interesting to see how the US market will react to the introduction of such a strong player, now that OnCourse Navigator is available over here.

If you follow this site closely you know that we are always looking for applications that expand the reach of GPS navigation, both from a map coverage point of view as well as what is considered to be usability and feature richness. Well, PaPaGO is a very interesting addition to the race. Mostly because it is the first application that has a very decent coverage of Asia and South Africa, but also for some of its special features.

Socket is entering the European handheld navigation arena with a new GPS package that bundles their Bluetooth GPS together with MyNavigator, Socket's PDA Navigation application. Developed by Netropa, this product has been available in the US in many different disguises for some time now.

As the Bluetooth GPS has been reviewed previously (See http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/emtac.php ) we will concentrate on the application here.

Space Machine have just released the 2004 edition (also called R3.0) of their PocketMap Navigator application.

PocketMap Navigator is of the sub-species "Requires Desktop Assistance" so you will need to install the "PocketMap Data Manager" onto your PC at home to select maps and some longer routes and to transfer them to the Pocket PC. Direct copying of maps from the CDs to the PDA is not something that is officially supported.

TeleType is a product that has been around for a while now, currently in it's latest incarnation, TeleType provides software for both Street Routing and aviation.

TeleType is the only application I know that is designed for Street Navigation and Aviation all in one hit. There are other products like Memory-Map, but these are oriented more towards topographical use, TeleType have done well to include both Aviation and Street Navigation maps in a single product set (maps obviously purchased separately)

TomTom Navigator 3 was announced officially at CeBit on 18th March 2004 and has recently started shipping in bundle form. Free and discounted upgrades will be available from TomTom's website in April. TomTom have had a busy year in 2003-2004, releasing a Palm version of TomTom Navigator, announcing the release of TomTom Go (dedicated in-car) and now TomTom Navigator 3 with Traffic Update Support.

Although this is what's considered an major release (as it's an annual one), don't expect too much that's new in TomTom Navigator 3.

We recently received a review copy of TomTom Navigator 2004 (in the UK this is known as the HP Navigation bundle) and had a chance to compare its functionality to the older versions (3.07 in Europe, 2.24 in the US).

Since TomTom Navigator 2.24 cannot open the newer maps I used a special version of TomTom Navigator 3.07 US – this way both applications use the same map data and I can focus on the application differences. (The only real difference between TTN2.24 and TTN3.07 is the itinerary mode.)

At the beginning of the 2004 we reviewed our first Palm OS navigation system. About the time that we released our review both TomTom and Navman announced GPS navigation packages for the Palm Tungsten PDAs. Life was about to get interesting.

We can now bring you the first of these reviews "TomTom Navigator for Palm T3". Thanks to PalmOne who have loaned us a Palm Tungsten and TotalPDA who provided the GPS bundle for review.

Isn't it typical? I have had an article prepared for a few weeks to co-incide with the release of the latest version of the TomTom Navigator for Palm software and the upgrade is released whilst I was away on business for a week.

Well anyway I am back now and the article has been released. Many TomTom Navigator for Palm users were asking why the new TomTom GO software was not available for the Palm Platform, and rightly so as it uses the same core functionality set. Well TomTom have now released this and it can be downloaded for free from the updates page on the TomTom site.

TomTom recently brought out the European maps package for TomTom Navigator 2.

This is a complete European country set which includes 8 CD's of maps to allow you to navigate around the whole of Europe.

You do need to purchase a country set CD before purchasing the TomTom European Maps as this does not come with the TomTom Navigator 2 program, so you will duplicate one of the countries you currently have.

TomTom Maps-on-Line is a map subscription service which allows you for a small fee to download city maps for specific areas you may be travelling.  Although routing is available, voice navigation prompts are not.

If you want a cheap alternative when visiting a foreign city, and don't need full routing or full map capability then TomTom Maps-on-Line may be better for you.  You can create a journey before leaving and only download the maps you require for later, or coupled with a mobile phone you can download new maps automatically whilst you're driving.

Wayfinder GPS bundle review

We have had GPS for some time now. Just over a year ago the first Bluetooth GPS appeared. Last month Nokia launched their latest super phone the 6600. Wayfinder have created the thread to draw all this technology together into an innovative Satellite Navigation solution.

I have spent the last few weeks having fun without my PDA just using the phone for navigation to provide this review of the Wayfinder Mobile Navigation system on a Nokia 6600 mobile phone. Click here for the full review.

Will the new breed of SmartPhones eclipse the PDA as the tool of preference for GPS navigation? Only time will tell, but Wayfinder is the heading the field in this new marketplace.

Wayfinder is a new product by Wayfinder. It's a GPS navigation system for Symbian based mobile phones, and Nokia have very recently started shipping Wayfinder and an Emtac GPS Receiver.

Wayfinder is an ideal solution for those who have the latest Symbian mobile phones, because it allows you to find a street, company, restaurant, in-fact any type of Point Of Interest (POI) quickly when you're in a foreign town. Wayfinder also allows you to save your destinations you enter, or use a call center to receive personal or automatic help.

Map Comparisons

With so many GPS Street Routing offerings it's important to show off the styles of maps used.  Although most of the products use either NavTech or TeleAtlas maps, the maps and interfaces vary from one product to another.

With the Map Comparisons you can see exactly what each product looks like in a long table and also see the various levels of magnification on each map product.

This was a direct comparison against Navman SmartST Pro and TomTom Navigator.

Many readers wanted to see what the main differences were between the two products, so we created a comparison review and graded each aspect of the products creating a head to head account for both products so you could see exactly which parts of each product excelled and which parts failed.

TravRoute recently released a new version of CoPilot in the US, and after a little wait, the new version is now available in Europe.

The new version has had it's name changed slightly.  TravRoute's new product range is now called CoPilot Live, and then follows the designation of the device it's primarily intended for.  Therefore the version we are currently reviewing here is called CoPilot Live Pocket PC 4.
