When we were at CeBIT back in March Brodit swore us to secrecy then showed us a number of new products that they were going to release this year. One of these was the amplified mount. Well this is now available and Handnav Technology have kindly provided us with a sample for review.
One of the problems with some of the modern PDAs is the small speaker and lack of audio volume. This had led to some PDA holder companies producing mounts with external speakers. There are quite a few of these amplified holders on the market so how does the Brodit version compare?

Brodit Mounts are a very high quality made mount that allows you to neatly snap them into place on many of the top named manufacturer cars.
The mounts are permanent and create a clean installation without having to drill the dashboard, or remove the dashboard in anyway.

As many of you who follow our site will know we have started to review navigation systems on mobile phones. Well that is fine but you need somewhere to put them. As the screen is now
an important factor in the navigation setup. My initial car mount was one bought from my local halfords for £7.50.
Although it was a generic clamp type mount it didnt last long when my wife, with the sublety of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, ripped the phone from the holder and damaged one of the holder's grips. This meant that I had to look for a better solution.

Until now their cradles came in two basic flavours, passive which were supplied without power and active with a built in 12v cigarette lighter lead. Further options for users with or without expansion jackets increased your options. Whilst these were perfect for those users with Bluetooth or Jacket style GPS receivers they prevented users who had mouse type receivers from utilising the excellent mounting systems.

As most people will know I am a brodit fan. I have been very impressed with the quality and construction of the Brodit mounts along with the useability of the mounts in real life.
We have reviewed quite a few different types of mounting options from Brodit and many other suppliers. So what is the Palm Tungsten one like?

Brodit are well known for their mounting systems for PDAs and other mobile devices. With the introduction of the TomTom GO there was obviously an opportunity to create a fixed mount rather than the windscreen suction mount provided with the GO. This mount is priced at £19.99 including VAT, but you will also need a vehicle specific ProClip.
The UK Brodit distributors Nemesis graciously provided me with a review sample of the mount from the first batch to enter the UK. So have Brodit come up with the perfect mount for the TomTom GO?

A new name on the block is Carcomm International from Holland. Specialists in mobile telecom and data they have put their experience to good use and developed a range of PDA Cradles for in-car mounting.
Currently the product line supports the iPAQ 38/39 & 54xx series and Fujitsu-Siemens Loox mounting solution.
In the next few weeks from the date of this review the XDA with hands free DSP car kit and cradle will be available shortly along with the Orange SPV car kit.

I have been talking a lot with Holux recently and something I have had to keep 'under my hat' for quite some time is a new car cradle they have been designing, and I'm glad I can now show it off in all it's glory!
The Holux CR-100 is a 4-in-1 device. It's a Car Cradle, a Powered Car Cradle, a GPS Receiver, and a Loud Powered Speaker!
Several companies recently have been making similar mounts, but one thing that always strikes me is many of these mounts always feel cheap (hollow plastic).

Have you ever used a windscreen suction mount and watched all your expensive equipment hit the deck as the sucker parted company with the glass?
I know I have! In fact on one occasion my GPS sleeve came apart with the force of the impact, not to mention the potential danger of all the cables and devices getting tangled in the car controls.
This review looks at a new windscreen sucker mount, which is claimed can hold up 22 pounds ( that is about 10 kilos if you are metric). |

RAM create a whole host of different mounts, one especially that we liked was a handlebar mount for a bicycle.
We never thought it would be possible to take a PDA on a mountain bike, but the mount is very secure, and absorbs the bumps quite well.
RAM also sell a lot of in-car mounts for Garmin handhelds and other PDA types.

When you first take the Seidio Multi-function Charger Mount out of the box, if you haven't seen one up close, you'll instantly like the look of it. Aesthetically it looks nice, very stylish and looks like it's built to withstand a lot of knocking. Don't get me wrong, it's not heavy, on the contrary it's about the weight of a Pocket PC, but the edges are finished off nicely, where there's a hole that isn't required a bung is put in place, it just looks a well finished product.
The multimedia mount comes in two colour flavours, one a dark gray, and one a silver.

One of the criticisms of some of the new iPAQ PDAs is the volume and quality of the sound output. This started with the 5450 and got slightly better with the 2210, but try listening to voice commands from your GPS application at motorway speeds and you are in trouble. In step Seidio with the G2500 range of powered, amplified PDA holders to solve the problem.
The Seidio G2500 is a PDA holder for your car that allows you to install your GPS system requiring you to only slot your PDA in and connect the audio cable. On some models (such as the iPAQ 54xx) you don't even need to plug in an audio lead as this is situated on the bottom of the PDA.

We already reviewed a Seidio G2500 back in July 2004 however, Seidio offer the G2500 for a variety of PDA's (HP iPAQ 19xx, 22xx, 38xx/39xx, 41xx, 43xx, 54xx/55xx; Dell Axim X3, X5; Garmin iQue 36; Palm Tungsten T; Toshiba; Treo; XDA II) and Lutz has completed his review on the G2500.
This review looks at the iPAQ 38xx/39xx variation, in the dark grey colouring (a silver colouring is available, too) and the technology behind the mount.

We already reviewed a Seidio G2500 back in July 2004 however, Seidio are continuously expanding the list of G2500 mounts for a variety of Pocket PCs. I recently received a review copy of the G2500 mount for the HP iPAQ 6315.
The box content is pretty much identical to the one reviewed for the iPAQ 3970 containing the G2500, three mounting options, and the 12V cigarette lighter adapter along with mounting guides.

TheClip.com offer what they call the Vent Mount. This is a mount that pushes onto your air vents in a car and locks into place with a support arm and allows you to stick a button to the back of your PDA and slot it into this mount.
This is the same style mount that is supplied with Pocket CoPilot and also PowerLOC Destinator.
The mount is very secure, fits snuggly and is quite robust.
