Amongst the GPS community Mitac's Mio 168 has been one of the most anticipated handhelds this year and with good reason. The Mio 168 is the first PocketPC to contain a built-in GPS receiver and has already appeared in other world markets. It's first showing here in the UK is courtesy of Evesham Technology who has chosen ALK's excellent CoPilot Live for their offering.

Aldi caused quite a stir when they released this bundle, at £329.00 it appeared to be fantastic value for money and came bundled with everything you could possibly need to get up and running with a working satellite navigation system. This review aims to cover the Medion PDA and the Medion Navigator software as well as the large number of accessories included!

NAVMAN GPS 3000 was first available in 2001 and came bundled with the Navman GPS 3000 sleeve, windscreen mount and a rebadged version of TomTom RoutePlanner (Navman SmartPath Trips) and TomTom CityMaps (SmartPath City).  This is the original choice of many due to it's portability due to a cable less set, but does suffer a little on satellite acquisition speed.

Superseded by NAVMAN GPS 3400

PowerLOC Destinator 2 is the successor to PowerLOC Destinator 1.  Destinator 2 was first made available in late 2002 and comes in both Pan European and North American versions.  The European version includes maps of UK and Europe.  A complete single country map is unavailable with Destinator as it uses sectional maps, so each country can be divided into multiple segments which can make routing across segments a little difficult if you need minor roads in each segment requiring plotting of several journey's for a single trip.  Destinator is also the popular choice of many as the maps are supplied from MapTech and are clean and very accurate.

TomTom Navigator 2 is the successor to TomTom Navigator 1. TomTom Navigator 2 was first made available in April 2003, a year on, the TeleAtlas maps are up to date as of December 2002, and comes in both a Software only version with country maps, a compete Western Europe map package (requires a single country set to be purchased), and also a complete hardware package which includes a Leadtek 9532 GPS Receiver, a windscreen suction mount, a vent mount, and a dashboard mount to fix the windscreen mount to.  TomTom Navigator has been the popular choice for many GPS users mainly because it allows addition of free external POI (Points of Interest) including our very own Pocket GPS Safety Camera Database.

One important aspect of all GPS Hardware is the Time To First Fix or TTFF. When using GPS Software it all hinges on how good the TTFF is and also how good the re-acquisition is of the GPS Receiver. Many GPS Receivers share the same chipsets from the same manufacturers, but some GPS Hardware are better in acquiring TTFF's.

We have created a TTFF table where all GPS Hardware we review is listed within this table. This helps understand which hardware is good and which hardware should be avoided.

Have you ever been in a situation where you have a PDA but don't know which GPS will work with it ?

You're not alone!  We've created a complete review page to discuss this.  We detail what PDA's have which storage cards which play a big factor in GPS connectivity.

We also show you which GPS hardware will work with which Pocket PC's and if you have a handheld GPS receiver, no worry there as we also list a whole host of cables that are available from different sources to connect a handheld GPS receiver to your PDA.
