Bengt Agert Saab 93 Review
Bengt decided to create a custom in-car mount for his Navman 3000 GPS Sleeve and Compaq iPAQ 3870 using the standard holder for the Navman/iPAQ and a home made prototype holder to fit SAAB 9-3. This gives him both a GPS setup, and also a bluetooth mobile connection to his T39 mobile and both devices can be placed on the same mount.

Carl Scott Toyota Rav4 Review
Carl's Review shows how he has converted an iPAQ style cover to a dashmount bracket, screwed the two together and has a very neat and slim line mount. This allows you to slide the iPAQ straight into the mount providing you don't require any Compact Flash or other sleeves attached to an iPAQ. |

Darren and Duncan's Navman Mount Review
Darren and Duncan's modified mounts show off two modifications to the Navman supplied sleeve and windscreen mount. Darren has modified the suction cup to make it more stronger so it doesn't fall off of the windscreen (a well known problem with the Navman mount) and Duncan has installed a Dashmount install that sits between the center air vents.

David Bradford Mount Review
David
decided to sell his Navman GPS3000 sleeve, which then left him like many with where is the best position to mount my Compaq iPAQ 3970 and how to power it and his new Emtac/Socket BT GPS.
David found the solution, in a universal gadget mount. It is a basic windscreen suction mount/flexible arm affair, terminating in a flat felt covered plate, behind which sits a powerful magnet. the usual square patch of metal backed with a powerful 3M adhesive pad and it's associate part.

Janusz Gerszberg In-Car Mount Review
Janusz Gerszberg (JGUI) as you may remember Janusz as, has emailed us some in-car mount photo. Janusz says.... I take the original Nokia's phone holder ($11), un-mount and use only a few parts without the phone socket, then screw it up in the air-vent in the front of car's dashboard. I took the original Compaq Compact Flash jacket ($34), un-mounted this, and added a screw in the center of back side, mount again, connected the above two parts together by rotating the screw.

John Child's Bike Mount Review
Map reading on a bike is even more of a pain than it is in a car. To check your route you need to pull up and park, remove your gloves, dig the map out from your pocket or bag, unfold it to the correct place and only then can you take a look at your route. Then the whole process has to be reversed before you can move off again. And that's in ideal conditions; add in a drop of rain or the need to find some light at night and the procedure becomes unbearable, especially in an unfamiliar area where this process may need repeating several times before finding your destination .

Lutz In-Car Custom Mount Review
Lutz took a spare iPAQ cradle (either USB or Serial will do) and chopped off the hind part of it. The remainder fits nicely onto the vent next to the driver's instruments (en route also adding some nice cooling to the device). He attached it with double sided sticky tape - sounds odd at first because normally these constructions fall off momentarily when exposed to heat, but this time there is no other force but the downward push of the cradle/iPAQ towards the vent (the iPAQ sits in the cradle up straight) so he hopes that this will not be affected by the heat problem.

It has been reported by quite a number of NAVMAN GPS Sleeve users that the original NAVMAN supplied bracket would fall off the windscreen no matter how carefully it was applied. Some people are more prone to this because they have coated windscreens which provides a reduced suction between the windscreen and suction cup.
For those that don't have a coated windscreen, try Darren Griffin's modified NAVMAN bracket below. If however you would prefer a mount that fits to your vents, take a look at Duncan Hill's modified mount.

I have Audi A4 3.0 Quattro Sport that has everything but SatNav - which has been irritating me for the past few months.
The Audi SatNav system retro-fitted is prohibitively expensive, and I felt other less expensive systems were too much of a compromise (and still too expensive…).
Because I use my ipaq 3970 quite extensively AND had heard from colleagues that navigation applications for pda systems were just as accurate as much more expensive systems I thought I would give it go.

Russ Gunn VW Golf IV Review
Russ
has a Brodit Proclip centre mount for the VW Mk IV Golf and Brodit powered cradle. After the mount and cradle were installed I routed the power adapter, along with a 3.5mm lead from the iPAQ's audio out socket, behind the cockpit panels.
I used heatshrink from Maplins to turn both these cables into into one in order to tidy things up (you can see this in the shots).

Simkna's Mount Review
Simkna took a HP iPAQ 2215 desktop cradle and hacked it about. Where as the cradle Lutz used in Lutz's In-Car Mount looks nice on the dashboard due to it tapering towards it's base, the HP iPAQ 2215 cradle just keeps getting bigger toward the bottom which makes it look a bit bulky and ugly.

Aeroplane GPS Navigation
One of the most fascinating parts of private flying is the process of planning a route, allowing for wind etc and then actually arriving on time.
VFR (Visual Flying Rules) flying, when you can see around you, involves the use of compass and map and allows the use of navigation aids, beacons etc to verify position and distance.
GPS is not part of a PPL (Private Pilots License) programme, and in plane GPS equipment is rare in the older club/ hire aircraft and specialist aviation GPS equipment expensive. |
